Tracking what a baby eats, and what gets flagged
Solids are a small part of a baby's intake and a large part of the worry. Here is what is worth tracking between six and twelve months, what AIM flags on its own, and the things it cannot tell you about a jar of baby food.
Most of what a baby eats in the first year is breastmilk or formula, and no camera can measure either. Solids are the smaller part of the intake and the larger part of the worry, and they are the part a log can actually help with.
This is about that part. It is also about being clear on where the help stops.
Start with what this is not
AIM is not a medical device and has no infant mode. There are no infant reference intakes built in, no growth charts, and no percentiles. Every target described below has to be entered by hand.
More importantly: feeding decisions for a baby belong with a pediatrician. Weight gain, allergy introduction, whether to supplement iron, when to move to cow's milk. A tracker is a record of what went in, not advice about what should.
What it is good for is the narrow thing: a record of the solids, the handful of nutrients that actually matter at this age, and a flag when something you asked to be told about turns up.
The three numbers that matter at six to twelve months
Most nutrients take care of themselves at this age. Three do not.
Iron. US guidance is 11 mg a day from six to twelve months. That is higher than an adult man's 8 mg, into a body a tenth the size, and it is why the advice to start solids with iron-rich food is so insistent. Breastmilk is low in iron and the stores a baby is born with run down around six months. If iron intake looks short, that is a pediatrician conversation, and the usual figure discussed is about 1 mg per kg of body weight a day.
Vitamin D. 400 IU a day through the first year, for breastfed and partially breastfed infants. Formula is fortified, so a baby taking a full formula volume is usually covered; a breastfed baby is usually not, and the drops are standard advice rather than a fringe precaution.
Zinc. Needed for growth and commonly low in the same diets that are low in iron, for the same reason: both come mostly from meat.
Everything else at this age is generally handled by milk, formula and variety.
Set them up as custom metrics
None of these are among the fourteen AIM tracks without configuration, so each is a custom metric: a name, a unit, a daily target.

Pin those three to the meal cards and leave everything else behind "more". A baby's log should be three lines, not fourteen. The point is to notice a week of no iron, not to audit lunch.
Iron-rich first foods, by how much they carry
Per typical serving, roughly. Purée, mash or offer as a soft strip depending on how you are feeding.
- Fortified infant cereal, 4 tbsp dry, 6.7 mg
- Beef, 1 oz cooked and puréed, 0.7 mg
- Lamb, 1 oz cooked, 0.5 mg
- Chicken thigh, 1 oz cooked, 0.4 mg
- Lentils, 2 tbsp cooked, 0.6 mg
- White beans, 2 tbsp, 0.8 mg
- Chickpeas, 2 tbsp, 0.5 mg
- Tofu, firm, 1 oz, 0.8 mg
- Spinach, 2 tbsp cooked, 0.8 mg listed, very little absorbed
- Prune purée, 2 tbsp, 0.4 mg
- Egg yolk, one, 0.4 mg
- Quinoa, 2 tbsp cooked, 0.3 mg
- Pumpkin seed butter, 1 tsp, 0.5 mg
- Sardines, mashed, 1 oz, 0.8 mg
- Fortified oat cereal, 4 tbsp, 4 to 7 mg depending on brand
Two things change how much of that actually lands. Vitamin C alongside plant iron increases absorption substantially, so fruit with the cereal is doing real work. And spinach is the classic trap: the listed milligrams are high and the oxalates block most of it, the same problem it has for calcium.
The two watch terms worth adding on day one
Honey. Not before twelve months, because of infant botulism. The spores are harmless to an adult gut and are not to a baby's. This catches the obvious jar, and more usefully the places honey hides: some granolas, some cereals, some yoghurts, honey-flavoured anything, and the honey-dipped pacifiers the FDA has warned about.
Added sugar. The AAP, the AHA and the CDC all say none before age two. Not "less", none. Added sugar arrives in fruit yoghurts, pouches, teething biscuits and a great deal of food marketed for babies.
Add both as watch terms and AIM flags them when they turn up, with the reason attached and marked as your term rather than as general advice. There is more on how flags are shaped in the ingredient flags piece.
A cap works too, and for added sugar under two the cap is zero, which is the clearest cap there is.
What gets flagged without you asking
Some categories carry a documented history and get flagged on their own.
Rice, and anything rice-based. Rice takes up inorganic arsenic from soil and water far more readily than other grains. The FDA set an action level of 100 parts per billion for infant rice cereal specifically because of it. Independent testing has repeatedly found products above that line, some several times over.
This matters more for a baby than for anyone else, because the dose is relative to body weight and rice cereal is often a first food eaten daily for months. It is not a reason to panic about a single bowl. It is a reason to rotate: oat, barley and multigrain cereals do not have the same uptake, and variety solves the problem without any calculation.
Cocoa, for cadmium. Large predatory fish, for methylmercury. Both are flagged the same way, by category and with the reason, not with a number.
What a photograph cannot tell you
This is the part that matters most here, so it gets said plainly.
No app can tell you how much arsenic is in the jar in front of you. That figure is parts per billion, established by mass spectrometry, and it varies between production lots of the same product from the same factory. Two pouches on the same shelf can differ. A photograph contains none of that.
So AIM will say that rice cereal is a category with a documented uptake issue and why. It will never print a number for it. Anything that shows you a contamination figure for your baby's lunch invented that figure, and a confident wrong number about an infant is worse than no number at all.
What actually reduces exposure is not measurement, it is rotation and preparation: vary the grain, and if you are cooking rice at home, cook it like pasta and drain it, which removes a large share of what is there.
Tracking it in AIM
Iron, vitamin D and zinc are not among the fourteen nutrients AIM tracks as standard, so add each as a custom metric: give it a name, a unit (mg for iron and zinc, IU for vitamin D) and a daily target of 11 mg, 400 IU and 3 mg respectively. Each is tracked on every meal from then on, pinned to your cards or left behind "more". Add honey and added sugar as watch terms while you are there.
Estimates from a photograph carry real uncertainty for micronutrients, because content varies with soil, cultivar, storage and cooking in ways no image contains. Fortified cereal is the exception and the one that matters most here: the iron figure is printed on the box and is reliable, so say the food was fortified and that number gets used instead of an estimate.
Treat the week as meaningful and any single day as approximate. And treat the whole log as one input to a conversation with your pediatrician, not a substitute for it.

- For solid food, yes, with limits. AIM has no infant mode and no infant reference intakes, so the targets have to be set by hand from your pediatrician's numbers. It cannot measure breastmilk or formula, which is most of what a baby under one year actually consumes, so the log covers the smaller half of the picture.

- No, and nothing that says otherwise is measuring anything. Arsenic in rice cereal is parts per billion, established in a laboratory, and it varies between production lots of the same product. What software can honestly do is recognise that a category has a documented history and say so, which is what AIM's flags do.
